What is uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage? You might have heard it called UIM. Do you need it? And if so, how much do you need?
Uninsured motorist coverage or underinsured motorist coverage, commonly called UIM, is insurance that you buy to protect you and your family in the event that the person who causes an accident doesn’t have enough insurance.
In Texas, typically a person will have $30,000 in insurance coverage. That’s the minimum required by state law, if they even have that—in reality, there’s so many uninsured drivers on the road.
So, what happens when you are seriously injured as a result of their negligence or stupidity and your bills exceed the $30,000?
Well, only thing you can do is look at your UIM coverage for the difference. If you don’t have enough, or if you’ve waived it, then you’re just out of luck. That’s why it’s so important to be sure that you have UIM coverage and purchase as much of it as you can. You can’t have enough. Look at your policy!
If you need us to take a look at it, we’d be happy to give you a free evaluation to see how much you’ve got and how you’re covered. Fill out our contact form or call our office and we’d be happy to chat with you about it.
