BAR TALK: What Happens If You Get Involved in a Hit and Run Accident?

What happens if you get involved in a hit-and-run accident? Who’s going to pay for your damage? What insurance do you look to?

I’m Brad Parker, the attorney you want, but hope you never need.

If you’ve been involved in a hit-and-run accident, obviously the first thing you want to do is be safe. Get to safety. Hopefully, if you’ve been involved in a hit-and-run accident, someone will have taken down the license plate number of the person who ran off. Hopefully, they can then be tracked down and held accountable. But oftentimes, that’s not the case. And so what do you do then? Well, that’s why you have uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, because the only real alternative you have is to file a claim on your own insurance policy.

If you don’t have the uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, you really are up the creek without a paddle, so to speak (learn more about uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage here). In the event that you are involved in a hit-and-run accident, first and foremost, be safe. Try to get the license plate number of the car that hit you, but assuming for a moment that you can’t, call your insurance company and file the claim with your own insurance company.
