BAR TALK: How Soon Should I Hire a Lawyer

So you’ve been involved in a horrible accident or a loved one suffered serious injury as a result of the negligence of someone else. How soon should you hire a lawyer?

You’re trying to decide whether or not you should hire a lawyer and how long you should wait before hiring a lawyer. Well, every situation’s a little bit different, but the bottom line is this, you should probably talk to a lawyer as soon as possible.

Most lawyers will tell you whether or not they want to represent you and whether or not they think you need to hire a lawyer. Frankly, many of the smaller claims may not even need a lawyer. But regardless, you should talk to someone immediately to find out what your legal rights are.

Likewise, if you do need a lawyer and a lawsuit needs to be filed, the sooner you do that, the better. There’s going to be evidence that needs to be gathered, phone records that may need to be obtained, the downloading of black box off of the car or trucks involved, getting witness statements from the various witnesses and police officers involved, as well as many other things that have to be done.

And with time, there goes the evidence. The longer you wait, the harder it is to gather that evidence.

The bottom line is this.

If you or a loved one have been seriously injured in an automobile or trucking accident, you should not delay in contacting a lawyer that’s board-certified in personal injury trial work (like myself). The sooner, the better, the better the evidence that you’ll get.
