Crashes involving a semi or other large truck saw a significant increase in 2016 in the number of deaths for both the truck driver and people in the other vehicle, according to new data released recently by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Truck crashes are a leading cause of fatalities on our roads. Overall, fatalities for large truck crashes rose to 841 from 725 across the country in 2016, per the report.
A Busy Intersection
With State Highway 121 & 183 running through Hurst, Euless, and Bedford, as many as 200,000 vehicles, many of them trucks, roar through the area daily. More trucks can lead to more truck crashes.
“Time and time again, we’ve witnessed the devastation that can occur in a crash involving a truck,” said Attorney Brad Parker of Parker Law Firm in Bedford. “The injuries are often more severe and the damage to vehicles more significant. The worst tragedies end in death far too often, as this report points out.”
Truck Driver Liability?
However, determining liability is not always so straightforward, Parker said.
Truck drivers may be held liable for operating the vehicle in a reckless or negligent manner, such as failing to yield, speeding, distracted driving or operating the vehicle under the influence.
But other parties may bear responsibility, such as the loaders, the municipality charged with maintaining the roadway, the leasing company or the manufacturer.
“Each situation is unique, but these cases are often complex and require immediate action to preserve evidence,” said Parker, whose firm concentrates in truck crash cases.
