The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just released new data about school bus accidents. According to the figures, 12 children on average are killed every year in accidents involving pedestrian schoolchildren. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also reports that an average of six children per year are killed in accidents that involve school buses.
Recently, an 11-year-old Texas child was killed when she was struck by a truck while she waited at the bus stop for the morning bus. The truck driver claimed he did not see the child standing at the stop. Another accident involved a seven-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a school bus in a rural area.
The NHTSA data further reveals that there were approximately 123 fatalities involving children below the age of 19 from 2001 to 2010. Out of those, approximately 69 percent were hit and killed by school buses, approximately 26 percent were killed by other vehicles involved in accidents with school buses, and five percent were killed in vehicles being used as school buses.
Overall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that over 1,360 fatalities occurred in school transportation-related accidents. Out of these, seven percent were the occupants of the school bus.
