Christmas has come and gone, and the post-holiday blues may have set in. While many make their resolutions for 2020 and look forward to the new year ahead, others dread this traditional time and look back on the past year’s unaccomplished resolutions. Maybe instead you should forge ahead and leave last year in your dust. A fresh start awaits. It’s a great time to start working toward managing depression in baby steps with your 2020 plan to feel better about yourself and your life.

Brad Parker says, “If you are suffering serious depression, you should seek out professional treatment. Talking to family members or friends about what you are experiencing is important. There is no shame in that.”

There are some simple adjustments to your everyday life whereby changing your daily behaviors you can help combat depression.

Create a Routine

Don’t let depression take away the structure from your life. Creating a gentle daily routine can help you get back on track. Set your alarm, get up and drink a cup of coffee. Even if you don’t have anywhere to be, take a shower, get dressed and groom yourself. You’d be surprised how much this can change how you feel.

Set Small Daily Goals

Depression can make you feel like you aren’t capable of accomplishing anything. Push back by setting daily goals for yourself, no matter how small. Start with washing the dishes or dusting the house and add more challenging daily goals as you go along.

Get the Blood Pumping

Brad Parker says, “Exercise has been proven to temporarily boost feel-good endorphins. A daily dose of exercise is how I personally deal with stress and anxiety.”

Change Your Diet

There isn’t a special diet that is going to eliminate depression, but if you are dealing with your feelings by overeating, it can compound the problem. Getting in control of your eating will help you feel better, and there’s evidence that foods with omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon and tuna) and folic acid (such as spinach and avocado) could help ease depression.

Get to Bed Early

Depression makes it hard to get enough shut-eye. Being tired can make everyday tasks seem harder and affect your outlook on everything. Brad says, “Try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. Avoid naps and remove all the distractions out of your bedroom…no computer or TV.” Over time many find that  their sleep improves immensely.

“Every day may not be good…but there is something good in every day.”
