To say Texas is a big state is an understatement. In the time you can drive from the eastern to western borders, you could have passed through five countries in Europe. From majestic national parks and hill country wineries to gulf beaches and bona fide stockyards, Texas just about has it all (not to mention some of the best food in the nation). Here are our top five picks for must-see places to visit during the pandemic.
Wimberly
Tucked away in the rolling hills less than an hour outside of Austin, sits the quaint town of Wimberly. Cool waters and charming artisan shops have lured tourists here for years. Home to popular cool-down spots such as The Blue Hole and Jacob’s Well, Wimberly has been named as having one of the top ten swimming holes in Texas. The beautiful deep blue pools are spring fed and stay a constant refreshing temperature, even in hot Texas summers. Currently the swimming capacity is being regulated to adhere to social distancing, and reservations for swimming times must be made online in advance.
Kemah
Best described as a playground for both children and adults alike, Kemah is a city in Galveston Bay near Houston. In addition to excellent deep-sea fishing, the Kemah Boardwalk is home to fabulous waterfront restaurants, amusements, charming retail stores, festivals and seaside shows every day. Don’t miss taking the kids to the Aquarium Restaurant where you can dine next to a 50,000-gallon tank housing fish, sharks and stingrays. You can also visit Stingray Reef and feed live stingrays in a touch-tank. Don’t forget to wash your hands and wear your mask.
Terlingua
Why wouldn’t you want to go to a ghost town in the west Texas desert? With a population of a whopping 58, Terlingua was once a thriving mining community. With its annual chili cook-off and close proximity to Big Bend, it still is alive with tourism. Sure you can hike and bike the national and state parks nearby, but one of the best things to do in Terlingua is nothing. Enjoy being disconnected, which is made easier with the zero cell reception you will have. The stars in the expansive night sky are good for the soul.
Canyon
Home to three of the most popular tourist attractions in the state, it’s easy to see why Canyon made our list. Palo Duro Canyon, also known as the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” is a place where visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, biking or even a breakfast on the rim of the canyon. The TEXAS musical drama will take you back in time with romance, song, dance and creative technology to tell a tale of Texas history. Canyon is also home to the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, where guests can revisit the time of the dinosaurs or take a stroll through the Panhandle oil boom days.
New Braunfels
Not far from San Antonio is the small town of New Braunfels, best known for its Gruene (pronounced “green”) Historic District. One of the main attractions is the Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas, operating continuously since 1878. Some of the biggest names in country music perform here. Grab a bite at the Grist Mill Restaurant on the Guadalupe or bring your own tube to lazily drift down the river, socially distanced of course.
