Tuesday morning at 10:15, police were called to the 10600 block of Camp Bowie Boulevard where a 68-year-old man driving a white pick-up truck plowed into a road crew. One member of the crew, identified as 45-year-old Phillip Szurgot, died at the scene.

It was initially believed that the driver of the truck was under the influence, but it has been revealed that he had a medical condition that caused him to lose control of his vehicle. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

“The driver of the pickup was actually trapped inside his vehicle,” said Fort Worth Officer Daniel Segura. “Things happen. Factors get involved. In this case, it was a tragic incident.”

Szurgot’s co-workers said that he had only worked for the company for one week. While the case is still under investigation, police say they do not expect to file any charges in this case.

Many car accidents are caused by drivers who are suffering from a pre-existing medical condition. Some of the health conditions that can make it unsafe for a person to operate a vehicle include:

  • Heart disease
  • Poor eyesight
  • Diabetes
  • Seizure disorders

Some states place restrictions or limitations on the driver license of a person with a pre-existing medical illness. These limitations depend on the seriousness of one’s impairment.
